The second day, we toured the Forbidden City and Tianamen Square. We hired a university student to lead us through the city. She learned how to speak english, and three other languages by herself, in order to gain income in the busy tourist months. Basically, the Forbidden City is the home of the Emperor in the old days - he and the Empress celebrated their wedding night in the City, and this was the seat of power in the country. All of Beijing is developed in a circular pattern around the Forbidden City - with Ring 1 being the closest (thus the government offices and the most powerful people), to Ring 5, where we find the airport and industrial areas. Our hotel was in Ring 2, so it was a close trip to everything.
