Janet's Convocation Graduation from VIU January 28, 2011

My graduation was a wonderful day. The weather even cooperated after the ceremony for pictures. The day was made all the more special by those who came; a surprise visit from Jen, parents, Pen, Sand and Shea and Rowan.

It was wonderful to see those with whom I've spent such an intense year and a half. Many were on their way to jobs in far reaches of BC and Canada. They were nervous and excited at the prospect to be leaving home to meet a new family elsewhere. My friend Laura received top student award. She and her husband are off to Meadow Lake Saskatchewan. Another friend off to teach on a First Nations reserve outside William's Lake. She'll have a teacherage for accommodation and the Chief is already looking for husband prospects for her!

My special day started with getting ready at home with Jen and the kiddies. Rowan wore his new dress up outfit, Shea a beautiful skirt and top from Christmas. Turns out it didn't matter what I wore, but I took Sally's advice.  We got the perfect parking spot in the underground lot, a harbinger of how easy the rest of the day was to unfold. I left the kiddies and Jen with everyone in the lobby and made my way upstairs to change. Always a problem with the sash.... It was very hot up there, but lots of laughs and hugs. We all look so different in grad gear. We followed the piper into the theatre and I heard hoots and yells as I entered - so knew exactly where everyone was sitting :)

The ceremony was very nice, begun with special blessings from the First Nations elders. Lots of speeches before it was time to receive our degrees. As I went across, Shea yelled "I love you Mum" and I yelled back "I love you too" - which was a sentiment to all those who had come to watch me graduate.

Afterwards lots of pictures outside and the rain stopped just in time. We walked up to the Bastion Inn restaurant for wine and dessert and more pictures. After goodbyes, a slow drive home with Jen and the kiddies.

I'm so glad Jen came, thank you Bates for keeping such an immense secret - it made a special day even more so. Thanks to all those who came and those who phoned with good wishes.  I hope you enjoy the pictures :)

A bit of a scrum before the ceremony.

Leaving coats and purses with family.

Introducing me and the degree I'm receiving. Barb McLeod in blue to the right was my professor and homeroom teacher. She retired in 2010 and so received the honour of carrying the mace. A big hug for her before walking the stage!

President and Chancellor and posing right after for a picture. This is just after Shea yelled, "I love you Mum". I don't remember much after that!

Receiving my degree.

A photo of me onstage with my degree - yay!

We all graduated that day :)

The rain cooperated and made for a nice cool ending to the ceremony! Lots of pictures taken, lots of laughter. I am so glad my family was there to share with me. As I met my cohorts, lots of hugs and "good lucks".

Then we met at the Bastion Inn restaurant for decadent desserts, tea or wine!  Thank you for the cards, presents, phone calls and good wishes :)

What a nice dressed up family!
