More High on Ice

A selection of photos. On Saturday, Daddy and I went down three times! The carvers started at 8 a.m. and finished at 10 a.m. They started the night before (4 hours) and then had 6 hours on Sunday to finish up.

This shows the process that an amateur carving team followed for their piece, Northern Impact.

-clay model

-arrangement of ice blocks (pink styrofoam)

finished product!

Interesting tools and equipment were used. Irons, chain saws, chisels.

These is Peter Vogelaar who used to live in FSJ. His was very complicated and my photos couldn't do justice it to it. His piece was called "North by Northest" and it was a canoe of voyageurs.

I think that this was my favourite--a howling wolf. There was a "people choice"award butDaddy and I decided not to participate (we didn't want to choose!)

This is the winning sculpture--a dragonfly by the Japanese artist.

We didn't have a clue what his piece was going to be when we checked it out on Saturday morning.

This was a tense moment. The wing of the dragonfly was supported by an ice column. Just before time was up, the sculpturer sliced the column away and the wing stayed in place.

The details were amazing! The facets of its eye, the hair on its legs, the veins in the wings.

As the finale, a huge fire was lit in this ice chimney. The fire supposed burnt for over 3 hours before it was put out. We didn't stay that long and, in fact, we probably stayed about 5 minutes too long because we all had chilblains in our fingers.

Quite the show!
